Transforming the Lives of our Students
Education for the Employees or Invited Guests of our Employer-Partners

Institute for American Apprenticeships was established (as Vermont HITEC) as a nonprofit educational organization in the year 2000. Over the past fourteen years, IAA has served over twenty-five regional employers and over one thousand individuals seeking an affordable education, career advancement, or college internships. Co-founded by Dr. Gerald P. Ghazi and Julie A. Davis, the nonprofit was envisioned to transform the lives of disadvantaged Vermonters through employer-partner sponsored education training. The idea was to offer Vermonters a rigorous education program where they could demonstrate to employers their ability to perform the position they sought before being hired. The philosophy was based on the recognition that an understanding of academic learning was absolutely necessary to ensure optimal performance and that this academic learning must be married to an applied learning component. This approach provided individuals seeking an affordable education and livable wage jobs with the structure, motivation and mentoring necessary to advance in their chosen career pathway. Using an immersion-based philosophy with strict behavioral standards, these education programs accelerated student-learning outcomes and maximized graduation and placement rates well beyond initial expectations and industry standards.
Healthcare

The first full-time education program delivered in 2000 by IAA addressed a statewide shortage of medical transcriptionists (MTs). After developing the curriculum, IAA delivered an eight month full-time education program at the Community College of Vermont site in Newport, Vermont. Studying and working on computers both at home and in the classroom, seventeen students successfully completed their immersion education. In addition to a IAA certificate, successful graduates received 32 college credits and a certificate from Burlington College through an articulation agreement. Each graduate was also offered full-time, work-at-home employment with EDiX, a subsidiary of IDX Systems Corporation (now GE Healthcare).

This successful program was subsequently delivered six more times in five different areas of the state. A total of 131 of the 150 students who enrolled in the program successfully graduated and became employed as MTs. Twenty of these students became employed at Fletcher Allen Heath Care (now UVM Medical Center) and replaced the need for outsourcing these positions to India. During the last session of the MT program in 2005, IAA developed a new distance education model, where the course was brought to students enrolled online, and was supplemented with "hands-on" labs and interactive staff support. IAA has continued to partner with health care employers to this day, introducing new academic programs preparing students for careers as medical coders, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, phlebotomists, licensed nurse assistants, and healthcare registration specialists. In addition to a certificate, all graduates from these education programs received a state-registered US DOL Apprenticeship Certificate of Completion.
Information Technology

In 2003, IAA developed and delivered programs in the information technology (IT) field and to date we have graduated over 300 students. Our programs were designed to prepare students for careers in IT with our employer-partners IDX Systems Corporation (now GE Healthcare), Dealer.com, Allscripts, and Vermont Information Processing, where successful graduates are employed as interface analysts, software analysts, web developers, software developers, account managers and installation consultants. All graduates from these education programs received a certificate and a state-registered US DOL Apprenticeship Certificate of Completion.

Full-time and part-time programs for electronic health record data (EHR) technologists were also developed for our employer-partners Fletcher Allen Health Care (now UVM Medical Center) and Clara Martin Center, respectfully. Successful graduates were employed as data abstractors and go-live support staff created to support the implementation and integration of the electronic health record system. All full-time graduates from these programs received a certificate and a state-registered US DOL Apprenticeship Certificate of Completion.
Advanced Manufacturing

Since 2005, IAA has developed and delivered academic programs to serve our advanced manufacturing employer-partners, including Hazelett Stripcasting, Husky Injection Molding Systems, Pre-Tech Precision, Flex-A-Seal, Preci Manufacturing, ITA-Aerotech, Latva Machine, Gear Works, Chamberlain Machine, Lucas Industries, Kiosko, Lovejoy Tool Company, North Hartland Tool, IVEK Corporation, Timken Aerospace, NSA Industries, Weidmann Electrical, Thermal Dynamics, Hypertherm, and Vermont Precision Tools. These programs have been delivered through collaborative partnerships with groups of these employers located in Springfield, St. Johnsbury, Milton, Colchester, and Swanton, Vermont; and in Lebanon and Keene, New Hampshire. In addition to a IAA certificate, all of the program graduates received between 27 and 42 college credits and a Certificate in Advanced Machine Tool Technology from River Valley Community College (RVCC) or Burlington College established through an articulation agreement. Students also received a state-registered US DOL Apprenticeship Program Certificate of Completion. Students who completed the additional requirements also obtained an Associate in Science from RVCC and were automatically accepted into IAA's Associate of Applied Science in Individual Studies with a Certificate in Advanced Machine Tool Technology.
Business Services

In 2015, IAA developed and delivered a Technical Documentation Writer program as its first Certificate program in the area of business services. Partnering with Triad Design Service of Williston, graduates were prepared for careers as technical writers for Triad’s customers in the military, aerospace, industrial, and technology industries.
Internships & Cooperatives

IAA has always embraced internships as a component of its offerings to our students and employer-partners. Our internship programs offer students dedicated mentors and the opportunity to engage in employer-based work products. In IAA internship programs, participating employers are shielded from managing the behavioral issues of students and are provided with an energetic and motivated intern that has been pre-screened using proven techniques. To date, IAA has placed and managed over 95 interns at our employer-partner businesses. IAA has also partnered with the University of Vermont's College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (UVM-CEMS) to place its engineering, computer science, and math students in internships and cooperatives with Vermont companies.
New Partnerships & Opportunities

As of January 2016, IAA has graduated over 1200 students from non-accredited full-time education programs, offering non-accredited associate degrees and certificates in the areas of Allied Health, Information Technology, Business Services, and Advanced Manufacturing. IAA has also placed over 100 interns over the past 16 years and in partnership with the University of Vermont’s College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences will expand internships and employer cooperative opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) related fields.
